Definition: The vertical distance from the sitting surface to the lowest point of the right elbow (the olecranon landmark) when the subject is sitting erect and the elbow is flexed at 90 degrees.

Regression models used

These tables are made using linear regression models derived from individual ANSUR II measurements of “elbow rest height, sitting”.

Male formula:
Sitting Elbow Height (cm) = 0.0733 × Height (cm) + 11.63

Female formula:
Sitting Elbow Height (cm) = 0.0471 × Height (cm) + 15.57

Gender difference

The difference is real but modest. At the same stature, men are typically about 0.5–1.0 cm (0.2–0.4 in) higher than women.

Because women generally have narrower shoulders that slope differently and slightly shorter upper arms, their elbows naturally rest slightly closer to their hips. Therefore, the physical gap between the seat and the bottom of the elbow is smaller.

How ANSUR II measures standing elbow

Standing elbow height is not directly measured. Instead, it is derived by adding sitting elbow height to stature, then subtracting sitting height (distance from the sitting surface to the top of the head).

Female Standing Elbow Height (cm) = 0.6536 × Height − 6.02
Male Standing Elbow Height (cm) = 0.6676 × Height − 8.95

At the same stature, women consistently have slightly higher elbow heights than men. This is the opposite of sitting and it is expected: women tend to have proportionally longer legs relative to their torso, so when standing, their elbow sits higher relative to the floor.

These height-specific values are derived from the ANSUR II anthropometric dataset, one of the most comprehensive publicly available body-measurement surveys used for ergonomics.

Each participant was measured using standardized protocols.

How these height-tables were created

ANSUR provides individual measurements. When medians are calculated at each 1 cm stature increment, some groups contain very few people. This can create irregular jumps that do not reflect true anatomical trends.

To produce stable and realistic height-based estimates:

For both sitting and standing measurements, sex-specific linear regression models were fitted to the individual-level data, linking stature to elbow height.

These models:

Closely follow dataset medians in well-populated height ranges
Eliminate statistical noise from small sample sizes
Preserve the anatomical relationships observed in the raw data

What can this info be used for?

Elbow height is one of the most important measurements in office ergonomics, directly informing the optimal standing or sitting desk and table height. It also helps with setting chair armrests correctly, and with finding the right desk and keyboard height combination to maintain a comfortable, open elbow position.
