Bitcoin has attracted a unique kind of following. Behind the memes, market cycles, and maxi tweets lies a surprising truth: the people drawn to Bitcoin share specific personality traits.
Data from a self-reported MBTI polls reveal a profile that looks nothing like the general population.
To explore the causes and implications of these specific bitcoin personality types, I’ve called on CS Joseph, a Jungian analyst known for exposing how people actually think and behave beneath the surface, recreated here with the help of AI.
🧩 What is MBTI?
Before digging into the MBTI of Bitcoiners, it helps to clarify what this actually measures. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a personality typing system based on Carl Jung’s psychological theory. It categorizes people into 16 types based on how they perceive the world and make decisions.
The four dichotomies used are:
- I/E – Introvert / Extravert
- N/S – Intuitive / Sensing
- T/F – Thinking / Feeling
- J/P – Judging / Perceiving
Some mockingly say, ‘MBTI is to psychology what Bitcoin is to finance.’ This framework can be reliably applied to culture, relationships, criminal profiling, and even economics.
Bitcoiners MBTI Distribution
Here you can see a popular chart often shared. The data comes from the earliest MBTI poll within the Bitcoin community, originally posted in late 2020, with the full results and thread published in 2021.

What we have here is a clash of psychological worlds.
Bitcoiners skew roughly opposite to the typical distribution, favoring rarer personality types. NT (Intuitive-Thinking) types dominate the Bitcoin demographic, especially INTJ (29%), INTP (22.3%), INFJ (9.8%), and ENTP (8.9%).
In contrast, traditional SJ (Sensing Judging) types, often associated with stability, such as ISFJ, ESFJ, and ESTJ, which make up nearly a third of the general population, are completely absent from the Bitcoiner MBTI types.
So what the hell is happening here?
🧠 CS Joseph Cognitive Function Analysis
Bitcoin is not a normie thing. It’s fundamentally anti-establishment. That means it appeals to people who don’t trust the system and are motivated by vision, systems thinking, and long-term strategic autonomy, mainly NTs and NJs. These are people with:
- High Introverted Intuition (Ni) – strategic foresight, the ability to predict where systems are headed.
- Strong Introverted Thinking (Ti) – logical consistency and independent truth verification.
- A healthy dose of Extraverted Intuition (Ne) – speculative and abstract reasoning about future possibilities.
🏹🌙 INTJ (The Mastermind) – 29% of Bitcoiners
This is wild. In the general population, INTJs are only 2.1%, but they’re 29% in the Bitcoin MBTI survey group. That’s nearly a 14x overrepresentation. Why?
INTJs crave independence and control over their own destiny, and they despise inefficiency. Bitcoin represents decentralization, incorruptible code, and a system where the elite don’t control money.
This personality type leads with Introverted Intuition (Ni), a function focused on predicting future outcomes and mapping long-term trajectories. Their auxiliary function, Extraverted Thinking (Te), drives them to execute those visions through logic and structure. When they encounter something like Bitcoin, built to outlast empires, it doesn’t just make sense. It clicks.
“Bitcoin is a protocol. INTJs love systems — not people.”
A very CS Joseph thing to say
🦉 INTP (The Architect) – 22.3%
Data-driven truth-seekers, logical to a fault. They’re Ti-Ne dominants, which means they don’t accept “common sense”, they need to validate everything. That could mean diving deep into monetary theory, Austrian economics, or cryptography.
They also hate bureaucracy and institutional incompetence, which the fiat system oozes.
🔥🗡️ INFJ (The Mystic Strategist) – 9.8%
This is an interesting one. INFJs are idealistic Ni-Fe types. They’re drawn to meaning, justice, and visionary systems that change the world.
Bitcoin, as a tool for economic empowerment, financial inclusion, and resistance against corruption, fits perfectly with their inner mission to create a fairer system.
🎭 ENTP (The Visionary) – 8.9%
ENTPs are idea-generating engines. Speculative systems, disruption, and innovation are where they thrive.
Bitcoin isn’t just a financial asset to ENTPs. They live for revolution.
🤯 The Absence of SJ Types
Let’s address the elephant in the room, one of the most striking features of Bitcoiners MBTI: the complete absence of traditional types.
ISFJ, ESFJ, and ESTJ, which together make up a quarter of the general population, show up at 0% in the Bitcoin MBTI survey.
This Twitter survey data is not perfect, but the trend is clear.
SJ types are duty-driven guardians of tradition and structure. They rely on Si (Introverted Sensing) and Fe or Te for decision-making, which makes them value proven systems, societal norms, and external stability. They trust banks. They trust government. They value order. Bitcoin is inherently destabilizing. It’s a paradigm shift, and Si users fear the unknown.
So SJs tend to stay out of the Bitcoin realm because, to them, it’s volatile, untested, and socially fringe.
“Bitcoin is chaos. SJs are order. They are natural enemies.”
Probably CS Joseph
🧨 Implications
Several implications fall out naturally once you look at Myers-Briggs Bitcoin data.
1. Bitcoin Is Still in the “Visionary” Phase
We are not in the “mass adoption” phase. If we were, you’d start seeing more ESFJ soccer moms and ESTJ corporate types in the space.
The latest survey data (from Brandon Quittem’s 2025 poll, building on his 2021 one) continues to show a strong dominance of NT types, particularly INTJ and INTP, who are future-focused and ideologically driven. While the full 2025 breakdown isn’t publicly detailed yet, the preliminary trends suggest the playground remains heavily skewed toward visionaries rather than the mainstream.
2. Bitcoin Culture Is Elitist & Tech-Heavy
The overrepresentation of INTJs and INTPs explains why Bitcoin spaces often feel cold, technical, and ideologically rigid. There’s little Fe (Extraverted Feeling) here; no one’s interested in making others feel comfortable. They’re interested in being right and winning the long game.
3. Adoption Will Require much more SF and SJ Types
If Bitcoin is to succeed at a mainstream level, it will need to bridge the psychological gap between the visionaries who created it and the guardians who maintain the real-world systems. That means UX improvements, institutional bridges, and trust-building.
Chart Origin and Caveats
This distribution data comes from an informal poll of cryptocurrency enthusiasts, not a peer-reviewed study. It was conducted from November 2020 through early 2021 by Brandon Quittem on his personal X account. The chart was created by @mindfulknowing.
Brandon himself notes that the data is not representative and may be skewed.
2/ Data Source
I tweeted, 500+ people self-reported Myers-Briggs, then we tallied up the responses. Much science.
*This is obviously not representative of "all bitcoiners" instead it's "bitcoiners on my twitter." Need to discount the "twitter bias" here. Oh well, it's fun.
— Brandon Quittem (@Bquittem) September 15, 2021
He doesn’t directly address a US-specific skew in his tweets, but the mentioned “Twitter bias” likely implies an English-speaking, US-heavy audience. The poll broadly targeted “Bitcoiners” on global Twitter.
The data is not infallible, but the trend is what’s important here, not the exact percentages.
He’s actually doing another poll currently
The 2021 results from Brandon Quittem’s poll of ~500 Bitcoiners closely align with a separate survey conducted in January 2022 by @BitcoinExplica, a Portuguese-language X account focused on studying, translating, and explaining #Bitcoin concepts to the Brazilian community.
This survey includes Bitcoin maximalists (95 people), Bitcoin + altcoin investors (43 people), and altcoin-only investors (2 people) in terms of investment preferences. However, the reported data is an aggregate of all 140 respondents.

In a thread replying to a New York Post article claiming “Bitcoin fans are psychopaths who don’t care about anyone” (based on some study), BitcoinExplica agreed there are likely more psychopaths and people on the autism spectrum among Bitcoiners. They tied this to MBTI traits, noting that Bitcoiners tend to score much higher (around 10x the general population average) on certain characteristics:
- Introverted (I) — more inward-focused
- Intuitive (N) — big-picture, abstract thinking
- Thinking (T) — logic-driven over emotion/harmony.
While common, this perspective is often viewed as misguided, a form of what CS Joseph refers to as “type prejudice” (or psychological racism).
He uses this term to describe how society and the psychiatric establishment pathologize normal human variations. He argues that modern psychology frequently treats specific personality types as having “disorders” simply because their natural way of functioning does not fit the societal norm (which he argues often favors SJ “Guardian” types or high Extraverted Feeling users).
Brazil vs. Base survey
Brazil’s data keeps the NT dominance, but shifts the balance in ways that speak volumes about cultural and adoption-stage differences.
Analysts (NTs)
Strategic, independent thinkers who focus on systems, mastery, and competence. They value efficiency, long-term vision, and problem-solving through logic.
- Brazil: 50.9%
- Base: 67.8%
- General Population: 10.4%
Brazil still shows huge overrepresentation, but INTJ numbers are noticeably lower (18.18% vs 29%), giving more room for other temperaments.
This points to a Bitcoin scene that’s still intellectually strategic but not as singularly vision-driven as the older poll.
Diplomats (NFs)
Idealistic, values-driven types motivated by meaning, personal growth, and helping others. They focus on harmony, vision, and purpose.
- Brazil: 20%
- Base: 26.7%
- General Population: 16.5%
INFJ and INFP are still much more represented than in the general population, suggesting Bitcoin attracts idealists who see it as a tool for change or personal empowerment.
These types are critical to ideological cohesion.
Sentinels (SJs) – Brazil’s Big Outlier
Practical, stability-oriented types who value order, responsibility, and proven methods. They preserve and protect systems they trust.
- Brazil: 18.2%
- Base: 1.4%
- General Population: 46.1%
Huge spike in Brazil, led by ISTJs (9.09% vs 1.4% in the Base survey).
These people are system-builders, organizers, and reliability-focused. In Brazil’s unstable economy, Bitcoin isn’t an abstract “freedom technology,” it’s a practical, rule-bound system they can trust.
Explorers (SPs)
Adaptable, action-oriented types who thrive in the moment, enjoy hands-on challenges, and seek opportunities in changing environments.
- Brazil: 10.9%
- Base: 4.1%
- General Population: 27%
More risk-taking, opportunistic types compared to the US-heavy sample. This could be linked to entrepreneurial hustle culture in emerging economies, or a skew from the altcoin investors.
Why the shift?
- Culture
- Base: US-heavy → ideological, future-vision driven.
- Brazil: More grounded adoption → hedge against inflation, bureaucracy, and instability.
- Adoption Stage
- Base: Still a libertarian-tech movement.
- Brazil: Already a financial survival tool.
⌛ Why do certain types lag?
SPs (Explorers) are adaptable and opportunity-seeking, so why is their representation so low?
In theory, they should be drawn to Bitcoin because of volatility, fast-moving opportunities, and big wins. However, their low share in both surveys makes sense once you factor in adoption friction and engagement style.
Here’s why they stay underrepresented:
- Hard to Engage With
- SPs are Extraverted Sensing users focused on tangible, immediate reality. If something isn’t instantly accessible, they may move on. They enjoy risk when they can see and feel the arena, such as poker, extreme sports, or street business.
- Culture Mismatch
- Bitcoin circles are heavily analytical and idealistic. SPs often prefer direct action over prolonged analysis or abstract discussion.
Brazil’s slightly higher SP count
The BitcoinExplica survey shows 10.91% SPs, much higher than the 4.1% in Brandon’s. That’s more in line with a “see a problem, seize an opportunity” mindset in Brazil, likely tied to hustle culture and fast adaptation in unstable economic conditions.
SPs might actually be more drawn to trading or altcoins, which points to variance in the broader crypto community personality types.
SJs: Slow Burn, Strong Finish 🐢
The next laggards SJs (Sentinels) are actually the slow-burn adopters in Bitcoin, but when they show up, they bring stability and persistence.
Why they’re usually not early adopters:
- High skepticism of new systems – SJs trust proven frameworks, institutions, and traditions. Bitcoin’s early “wild west” image, combined with lack of regulation, sets off their risk alarms.
- Preference for established authorities – They often want to see mainstream banks, governments, or respected organizations validate a system before committing.
The volatility, scams, and constant changes in the wider crypto space can feel like the opposite of their “safe, predictable” ideal.
📊 Why Brazil’s numbers break the pattern (18.18% vs 1.4% in Base survey):
Economic instability forces pragmatism. SJs may not want to trust Bitcoin, but high inflation and currency controls push them toward better stores of value.
In Brazil, adoption is less about “revolutionary tech” and more about protecting purchasing power.
Once SJs see people in their family, workplace, or church using Bitcoin successfully, they feel safer joining in.
In CS Joseph terms, SJs are the guardians of the tribe. They keep systems running, enforce standards, and ensure resources are preserved. For Bitcoin to win them over, it needs to present itself not as an escape from the system, but as a better, safer system.
If Bitcoin reaches mass adoption, SJs will become the largest group, since they account for roughly 46% of the general population.
Final Thoughts
While all of the Crypto MBTI data comes from informal surveys, the consensus across sources is clear. The Bitcoin community MBTI profile is unusually concentrated in Intuitive Thinking types. The psychological impact is an echo chamber of rational, future-focused thinkers, which has fueled technological progress while also shaping the community and its communication style. Understanding this MBTI profile helps explain why Bitcoin’s culture feels distinct from traditional financial groups.
If you’re an INTJ, INTP, or one of the other highly represented Bitcoiner MBTI types, you’ll likely feel at home. If you’re a cautious traditionalist who prefers established systems, you may join later. That’s fine. The network will be better by the time you’re ready.

I’ve noticed that Bitcoiners often exhibit a certain intensity in their convictions, which seems to align with the INTJ and INFJ types in particular. Their ability to see patterns and anticipate trends likely makes them well-suited to the volatility of crypto markets.
Yeah, Bitcoiners have rock-hard convictions. I was surprised that INFJ is that high. It’s interesting that, opposed to INTJs, they use feeling instead of cold rationality. They often spot patterns in human behavior and values, and how ideas evolve over time.
